
The Chinese new year 2019 saw extensive use of WeChat in exchanging new year greetings. Users resorted to digital messages and greetings to celebrate the event. Wechat is China’s popular social media app developed by Tencent Holdings. In the first week of February i.e. from Feb. 2 and Feb. 9, about 823 million red envelopes were exchanged using WeChat. Red envelopes are monetary gifts received on special occasions such as birthdays, new year etc.
On Feb 4, the Chinese New Year’s Eve, WeChat moments was buzzing with increased activity as people posted on WeChat moments quite similar to the Twitter’s timeline.It was people born after the year 1990, who were most active in posting messages, exchanging red envelopes and emojis. Among the cities, Beijing was the one where maximum messages and red envelopes were received followed by Guangzhou and Chongqing.
